Why My Instagram Doesn’t Matter (And Why That’s Okay)
By Sean Beckingham, Partner of Branding & Buzzing
As the owner of a marketing agency, people often expect my Instagram to be the epitome of a perfectly curated feed. They assume my profile should look like a Pinterest board come to life, showcasing my sharp skills, innovative ideas, and creative mastery. But here’s the truth: my Instagram doesn’t matter in that way. And I’m okay with it.
The Reality Behind My Feed
There’s a reason I no longer create most of the content for my agency’s social media accounts. My skills, while once razor-sharp, aren’t what they used to be when it comes to editing or staying on top of every latest trend. Plus, my personal Instagram is meant to show my real life—to my friends, family, and yes, the occasional follower who stumbles upon it. It’s a mix of experiments, offbeat ideas, and unpolished moments.
Take, for example, the time I used CapCut’s reverse tool to create a quirky video. I had no grand purpose for it, just a sense of curiosity and a free trial to play with. It wasn’t perfect, and that was the point—it was fun. And fun often fuels creativity in unexpected ways.
Experimentation Is Key
Sometimes, as a senior leader, it’s crucial to step out of the 1,000-foot strategic view and get down into the nitty-gritty of the 1-foot view. Tools like CapCut or Canva—apps many of us have tinkered with—remind me what it feels like to be hands-on again.
At Branding & Buzzing, we invest in premium versions of these tools for our clients and train our team to master them. These tools enable us to create polished, professional content. But on my personal account? You’ll occasionally catch me cobbling together something using a free trial or experimenting just for the sake of it. Why? Because playing around with these tools helps me stay connected to the platforms and processes we use for our clients.
Staying Grounded in the Process
When you’re a senior leader in any company, especially in a creative field like marketing, it’s easy to get stuck in the strategy phase. But to truly understand the challenges and opportunities in this space, you need to get your hands dirty once in a while. Testing tools like CapCut or Canva reminds me of what our team—and our clients—experience when creating content.
It also keeps me humble. Not every post needs to be award-winning. Sometimes, it’s enough to try something new, learn from it, and move on. That’s how we stay sharp in an ever-evolving digital landscape.

Why Imperfection Matters
So, if you visit my Instagram and find a hodgepodge of experimental posts, know that it’s intentional. It’s a reflection of real life—not a highlight reel. While my agency’s feeds are carefully crafted, my personal feed is a sandbox for trying new things.
In a world obsessed with perfection, I choose to embrace imperfection. Because sometimes, the best ideas come from just messing around with a new tool or throwing caution to the wind.
And who knows? Maybe the next “offbeat” experiment will inspire something great for a client—or at least make a few friends laugh. Either way, I’m okay with it.
