Celebrating Indigenous Trade: A Memorable Experience at the USDA Trade Mission

We at Branding & Buzzing recently had the privilege of attending an extraordinary event: the first USDA Trade Mission dedicated to Indigenous products. Representing us at this event was Eric Wood, who shared his insights and experiences from the mission.

Eric’s involvement began with an invitation from the FAS Canada Team to be part of a judging panel for a pitch competition. Without hesitation, he accepted, not fully realizing the magnitude of the event. Soon, the significance became clear—it was the first time Indigenous Nations and businesses from both sides of the US-Canadian border gathered together with government and commerce leaders to explore opportunities and celebrate Indigenous enterprise.

The mission was not just another trade show; it was a historic convergence marked by a special sense of community and purpose. Participants echoed this sentiment, noting the unique atmosphere and profound impact of the gathering.

A highlight of the event was the pitch competition, where Eric had the honor of judging alongside esteemed leaders such as members of the NCIAF, Minnesota’s Lt. Governor Fleming, Under Secretary Taylor, and Chef Jacobs. Judging this competition was a thrilling experience, showcasing the innovative spirit and rich histories behind the participating brands. The grand prize winner, Navajo Mikes, stood out for its exceptional product and commitment to giving back to the community. We were delighted to present the award to Navajo Mikes and are excited to support their growth as they scale into the Canadian market.

Additionally, Eric introduced his fellow judges to a local favorite, JAPADOG, adding a delightful cultural exchange to the event.

The USDA Trade Mission was a resounding success, and we are excited about the opportunities it has unlocked for Indigenous brands. We look forward to continuing our support for these businesses as they expand and thrive in new markets.

At Branding & Buzzing, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) have always been a priority. We believe in creating an inclusive environment that respects and values diverse perspectives and voices. This commitment to DEI was reflected in our enthusiastic participation in the USDA Trade Mission and our support for Indigenous businesses.
